Canary Wharf – 8 minutes by train or 2.2 miles / 7 minutes driving

Canary Wharf is located in the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs in the Borough of Tower Hamlets in East London. The West India Docks once formed part of the busiest port in the world. Around 90,000 people work in Canary Wharf and it is home to the world or European headquarters of numerous major Banks, professional services firms and media organisations.

London E16 postcode is on the outer Eastern border of London. Most notable for being home to the ExCel exhibition centre and to London City Airport. The area is serviced by Docklands Light Railway, a mono rail service into the City of London, and by a Dual carriageway which connects E16 with the Docklands / Canary Wharf area.

Opened in 1855 on a previously uninhabited area of the Plaistow Marshes, it was the first of the Royal Docks and the first London dock to be designed specifically to accommodate large steam ships. It was also the first to use hydraulic power to operate its machinery and the first to be connected to the national railway The Royal Victoria Dock has experienced major redevelopment under the London Docklands Development Corporation. The dock itself still exists and is accessible to ships, although its western entrance has been filled in and it is now used chiefly for watersports. Its transport links have been greatly improved with new roads and Docklands Light Railway lines running along both its north and south side.

Most of the original warehouses have been demolished but the historic 19th century K-S and W Warehouses - both listed buildings - have survived.

The dock is dominated by the ExCeL Exhibition Centre

The Emirates Air Line will be the first urban cable car system of its kind in the UK, and a much-needed river crossing in the area - reducing travel time to five minutes. From summer 2012, the new crossing will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river Thames from stations at Greenwich Peninsula and The Royal Victoria Docks. Emirates have sponsored the fast, regular and accessible crossing in a deal worth £36m over 10 years. The crossing will encourage regeneration in the area and provide access to visitor attractions.

The cable car will cross the river at a height of over 50 meters, 87 meters and at 60 meters offering spectacular aerial views of the Olympic Park, The Thames and City. The cable car will provide a crossing every 30 seconds carrying up to 2,500 passengers per hour in each direction, equivalent to the capacity of 50 buses. It is planned that the cable car will also be able to convey.
